Franklin, North Carolina will host its 2nd Annual April Fools Trail Days to include the 6th Annual Hiker Bash on Friday and Saturday, April 2 & 3, 2010. During these events Franklin opens the town to thruhikers of the Appalachian Trail as they start their journey north to Katahdin.Located 11 miles from the AT, Franklin is a welcome respite from the cold and usually wet early spring weather.

The 6th Annual Hiker Bash, organized by Ronnie Haven, will be held on both Friday & Saturday nights and will include food, music and entertainment at 6 o'clock each evening at the Sapphire Inn Motel on East Main Street. This is a great venue for thruhikers to share stories and meet former thruhikers of the AT. Contact Ronnie Haven by email or phone 828-524-4431.

Saturday's event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Big Bear Shelter at the Little Tennessee River Greenway near downtown Franklin. There will be numerous displays featuring the Nantahala Hiking Club, AT Conservancy, and Leave No Trace, along with educational booths and food vendors.

Among this year's featured guests is Jennifer Pharr Davis, Women's Appalachian Trail Record Holder & Blue Ridge Outdoors 2008 Person of the Year. In addition to speaking, she will available most of the day to answer any questions, sign autographs and share her knowledge of the AT.

Gene Espy, the second recorded thruhiker of the Appalachian Trail, is scheduled to be on hand again this year. Live music will also be featured throughout the day on Saturday featuring the Frog Town Four and others.

The April Fools Trail Days event is sponsored by the Town of Franklin as part of the town's AT Community Partner Program and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
